Hawaii living - those first few days
It's our first official day in Oahu. Lo and I both get up around 3am. We're still on Florida time. Thankfully, the Toddler sleeps until 5am. I check the CVS site - still no results. At 7am, Lo and the Toddler venture out to check out our new neighborhood. I'm a little jealous -- I peer at them wistfully from our apartment window as they walk away.
I'm not sure what to do with myself. We have no furniture or anything to eat. I open all the windows and I'm pleasantly surprised at the nice breeze. I find out later that's the Trade Winds that come and go. I assess our new place. It's half the size of our place in Orlando but with the way it's laid out, it doesn't look that small.
Lo and the Toddler return about an hour later. They have breakfast, drinks and toilet paper. I'm thrilled! I'm excited to try the local breakfast from McDonald's that they brought me. I've had spam before but Portuguese sausage is new to me. I like it.
After breakfast, we decide to do a small pickup order from Walmart. Big. Mistake. We find out after Lo is in the cab that a round trip will cost $130 plus tip, bag fees, and meter time while they load our groceries. The driver has mercy on us and gives us a huge discount. He also shut off the meter while they were loading our groceries and helped Lo bag items. This situation reminded us that God always seems to put the right people in our path at just the right time.
We have to meet with the building manager to register our family but we have no furniture and I'm on quarantine. We hover at our door of our apartment while he explains the law of the land (i.e., people are nosy so don't tell them all your business). When Lorrin mentioned that someone asked if we were on vacation when they saw us moving in, he sarcastically replied, "does this look like a hotel?" 😄 He seems pretty direct and down to earth -- exactly what you need in a building manager.
By late afternoon, I'm over sitting on my inflatable bed all day. I start checking online ads to see if I can find an inexpensive chair to use until we can get real furniture. I'm still, at this point, hoping against hope that my negative result will post soon so we can take advantage of Black Friday furniture sales. I find a professional high quality foldable stool on sale at the drug store near us. I send Lo out to get a few -- I'm confused when she comes back with only one. I'm imagining a foldable work/utility stool but we got was this (yes, that is a gallon water bottle added for scale):
I go back to sitting on my bed. By late Wednesday afternoon, I cave and get two camp chairs and a tv delivered. Impulsive purchase? Yes, but necessary. As I get ready for bed that night, I glance around our living room before I head to my bedroom and my inflatable bed. I realize that I've basically flown 4,640 miles to go glamping.
I check the CVS site one more time. Still no results. I'm resigned to the fact that I'll be quarantined over Thanksgiving. I'm a little bummed but I know that I have so much to be grateful for. I'm so thankful for this opportunity (setbacks and all) and look forward to exploring Oahu soon.
Lol, I’m screaming at your glamming comment, but I’m so proud of you beauties! This is an awesome adventure for you and I’m so excited for this new chapter! Also that breakfast looks bomb 🤤
